What Are Calcium Oxalate Kidney Stones?
Of the four types of kidney stones identified by the medical science, calcium oxalate kidney stones are the most common. In fact they account for about 80% of all kidney stones cases. Calcium and oxalate which are part of normal daily diet play a part in the formation these kidney stones. Dietary oxalate is a great organic molecule discovered in many vegetables, fruits, and nuts In addition oxalate in urine is also produced in the body naturally which also can affect the formation of kidney stones. Then the calcium from bones is also believed to increase to the procedure of kidney stone formation.
If calcium and oxalate are found to cause kidney stones, they should cause this calcium oxalate stones in everybody because these two substances form part of normal diet of almost all people. Some doctors recommend that you should drink at least eight glasses of water every day to flush out stones and other waste from your kidney naturally.
As for calcium it has been found that the calcium from food doesn’t increase the risk of kidney stones. In fact calcium helps prevent kidney stones because calcium in the digestive tract binds to oxalate from meal and stops it from entering the blood, and then the urinary tract, where it can form stones. Moreover calcium is necessary for maintaining the density of bones. On the other hand it is believed that calcium supplement could increase the risk of kidney stones formation.
As oxalate is the other substance that causes kidney stones, it is recommended to limit its intake to help reduce the kidney stones risk. This may be done by avoiding or reducing the intake of substances such as spinach and rhubarb that have oxalate in them.
Salt is necessary. Your body needs it but when taken in excess it can cause problems. As far as kidney stones are concerned, when the kidneys extract the sodium in salt, it causes more calcium to be passed into the urine. This excessive calcium in urine combines with oxalate and phosphorus to form kidney stones. So reducing salt in your food intake is one way to reduce the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones formation.
Some studies suggest that citrus drinks like orange juice and lemonade help in reducing kidney stones because the citrus in them prevents the formation of crystals into kidney stones. But, these results have not been verified by large-scale trials. Moreover, it should be remembered that while citrus drinks may help in alleviating calcium oxalate stones but can be harmful if you have phosphate stones.
In addition to above it is believed that meat, eggs and fish contain purines which could increase the risk of calcium stones formations.
